Revision & Refinement

Your first draft is discovery. Your second through tenth are craft. Yeats rewrote poems years after publication. Give yourself permission to write badly—first drafts are for discovery.

Revision means: cutting unnecessary words, strengthening weak verbs, finding and removing clichés, tightening syntax, reading aloud to hear what works. When you revise, ask: Does every word earn its place? Is there a word I've used three times? Can this verb be stronger? Is this adjective needed?

Use these techniques: read backward to catch weak language. Read aloud to hear rhythm. Wait a week between drafts. Share with trusted readers. Mark every weak word and find three replacements. Choose the strongest.
