Free Verse: Rules & Freedom

Free verse has no meter and no rhyme. But this doesn't mean no rules—you make the rules. Every choice becomes structural: line breaks, repetition, white space, word order. Free verse is hardest because without formal constraints, you must create your own.

William Carlos Williams wrote "so much depends / upon / a red wheel / barrow / glazed with rain / water..." The line breaks are the entire poem. Read Louise Gluck, Ocean Vuong, Claudia Rankine. Notice how they structure meaning through breaks and space. Something is always holding free verse together—repetition, alliteration, syntax, image pattern.

If you can't identify what's holding your free verse poem together, it probably isn't working.
