Using Negative Space

Absence is presence. White space on the page creates meaning. Gaps between lines. Ellipses. Dashes. These aren't empty spaces; they're where readers fill in meaning.

Emily Dickinson's dashes force readers to pause, linger, reconsider. Her white space is content. Ocean Vuong uses space to create rhythm and emphasis. The gaps ARE content. Readers complete the poem in their minds. That completion IS the poem's power.

Use silence and space deliberately. Each empty area should have purpose—emphasis, breath, mystery. The most powerful moment might be what's not said. Your reader's imagination is more powerful than description.
