Internal Rhyme & Hidden Music

Rhyme doesn't only happen at line endings. Plant rhymes within lines: "The bell fell from the cellar" has internal rhyme. This creates music without being obvious.

Internal rhyme can be subtle—readers don't consciously notice but they FEEL the soundplay. "Bitter butter" vs. "furious furnace" create different moods through sound. This soundplay makes poems memorable. You remember them because they stick in your mouth.

Hidden music might be assonance or consonance rather than strict rhyme. The point is sonic satisfaction without announcing it. Contemporary poets layer sounds throughout without end-rhyme.
