Line Breaks: Where to Cut

Line breaks are your most powerful tool. Where you break a line changes meaning. "I love / you" differs from "I / love you." The break changes emphasis.

Break at natural speaking pauses. Break for emphasis. Break to force readers to reconsider words. "She carried / sadness like a stone"—the break after "carried" emphasizes the action. Readers complete the thought, then discover it continues differently.

Read your poem aloud and listen to where you naturally pause. That's often where you should break. Deliberate line breaks create conversation between you and reader.
